Overview

This concept project is an online orientation for new hires within a community college academic advising department. The course provides learners with an interactive onboarding experience where they will familiarize themselves with institutional resources and develop a personal academic advising philosophy. The orientation was developed using Articulate Storyline 360 and Canva.

The Client’s Problem

Marina College is a multi-campus institution that has a designated academic advising department for every location; each with a different supervisor. Every department is responsible for training the advisors hired on their campus, which has resulted in the transfer of inconsistent information and varying training timelines. The client has requested a streamlined orientation program for new hires across all campuses, that will measure an advisor’s readiness to meet with students.

Solution

It was decided that an on-demand eLearning solution would best meet the needs of the clients and the new hires. A competency of academic advising is having knowledge of institutional policies, procedures, and resources, making the past training very content-heavy with minimal room for new hires to practice advising students before being assigned a caseload. To address both needs, I have built-in interactive components such as scenario-based Live Chats, where advisors can practice counseling students. The Live Chats also serve as a knowledge check for supervisors to measure advisors’ training progress. Additionally, the course includes an Advisor Toolkit full of standard advising documents and resources used across the college.
